The Journey of Lijun Wang’s Kungfu Dreams

Note: As a new generation of Chinese Kungfu master, he draws public attention in his “actual combat”, and the number of his followers in the United States amounts up to tens of thousands. Not only did he establish the Tai Chi Kungfu Academy, but also teaches at California Institute of Technology, University of Southern California, UCLA and other universities and institutes. Aiming at spreading the Chinese Kungfu arts culture, he published a series of VCD teaching video, which causes a deep attention from the mainstream society of the United States, and he was invited for talks and performances by such great institutes as the U.S. Immigration, Boeing, East West Bank, etc. What is more, he was also invited to show the “actual combat” by the US Police Bureau, to shoot films and direct the Kungfu skills by Hollywood. The name of this Chinese legendary Kungfu master is called: Lijun Wang.

Different from the common Kungfu learners, Lijun Wang progressed his studying into two directions from his childhood, one of which, as is known by all, was the Chinese Kungfu combat, and the other the literature and art. Surprisingly, not only does he make a great achievement in these two areas harmoniously, but his pursuits gets where almost nobody has ever reached by all his life.

Great Achievement in Kungfu after Hard Practice

Lijun Wang was born in an ordinary family of intellectuals in the Province of Henan, China. He said that the reason why he chose to study Kungfu was greatly due to the political chaos in that period, and he could clearly remember that his father was insulted as “Choulaojiu”, which stands for the person in the lowest position of a society, just because he was a teacher, and was often bullied in the school because of his weak physique. As for a child, Lijun Wang even could not feel a little piece of safety from all of these. Thus, the purpose of protecting himself and his relatives later became a direct incentive for him to learn Kungfu.

With this hope, he began to learn Kungfu from some famous civil Kungfu masters. After studying from his enlightening teacher Jianhua Zhang, he could perfectly use talon boxing. And from Kungfu monk Xueming Wang in the Shaolin Temple, he systematically laid the foundational of the Shaolin Kungfu such as Big red boxing, small red boxing, Rohan boxing, Shaolin King Kong Boxing, and achieved at last in the perfection of his buddhism benevolence study.

On the field of Tai Chi, he studied many Tai Chi actual combat skills from Tai Chi master Junguo Jin, and became the 12th generation of Chen-Style Tai Chi. What’s more, he learnt much Tai Chi Theory from Zhijun Zhang, and finally succeeded perfectly in the unification of Kungfu theory and practice. Here we just showed parts of the famous teachers who ever gave him greater help, however, many of those less important are still not mentioned.

In addition to study Kungfu from civil Kungfu teachers, Master Wang also experienced very formal training and learning in Kungfu institutes. In 1972, he entered Xinyang Kungfu Team of Henan Province, and studied Southern boxing, Long-style boxing, back-through boxing, Mantis boxing, Talon boxing, Drunken boxing, and machetes, spears, swords, sticks and other weapons. In his 16, he won in a competition held in Henan province by his Drunken style, so got a great favor from the coach of Henan Kungfu Team and entered into Henan Professional Kungfu Team. 10 years later, in Kungfu department of Henan University, he continued his learning in kinematics, mechanics, Shaolin Kungfu, Tai Chi and other Kungfu weapons.

Through the studying from civic teachers and the training in formal institutes, Master Wang totally mastered more than 60 sets of boxing, inner inherited Kungfu, outside Kungfu, and a variety of combat instruments. At last, he almost achieved perfection in all the eighteen Chinese traditional combating styles.

Lijun Wang’s studying Kungfu without considering its various specific schools, his adoption of each school’s advantages, and his good personal comprehension and dilligent training of Kungfu, made him get great achievements. In August 2000, he won two gold medals in Tai Chi competition routines and traditional routines respectively. In August of the next year, he served as the umpire and offered expert talks regarding Self-Defense during the International Wushu Championship held by the World Martial Arts Association in Orlando, United States. Additionally, in some of the major domestic competitions, he was also honored such as 75kg free combat, Tai Chi, Tai Chi sword champion, Wushu champion, and other representative medals of honor.

In the August of 2000, Master Wang was invited to attend the World Wushu Championship in the United States, and after that he devoted his time in the dissemination of Chinese Kungfu and in the universal work. Not only did he establish the Tai Chi Kungfu Academy, but also teaches at California Institute of Technology, University of Southern California, UCLA and other universities and institutes. In addition, as a member of the National Federation of Martial Arts referees, he also held talks on a variety of martial arts, and published a "PCCS Practical Chinese Combat System 1.2.3", "32 Methods of Eight Strength Foundations ", "Chen-57-style Tai Chi", " Chen-83-style Tai Chi", " Chen-71-style Tai Chi", " Chen-style Fan Tai Chi", "Secret Self-defense Methods", " Shaolin King Kong Boxing", "Shaolin Qimei Stick", "Shaolin Drunk Fist "and other teaching video, DVDs. After that, Chinese Kungfu master "Wang Lijun " became the major targets of media reports, and also was requested by the US Police Bureau to teach the Kungfu combat techniques.

Master Wang carefully studied the attack and defense characteristics of Chinese Kungfu arts, and on the basis of Tai Chi, he created a new unpredictable distinctive style, in which he could use the strength from others and apply the offensive and defensive counter-capture techniques, and he was thus honored as the First Tai Chi Combatant by his peers in Los Angeles.

Benefit from Studying Literature and Arts

By practicing Kungfu on one hand, studying literature and arts on the other, Master Wang focused on both. In 1976, he entered the Xinyang Arts Cadre School in Henan Province, majoring in performance, vocal music and dance. After his graduation in 1979, he was assigned to the work in the Dabie Mountains Art Troupe in Henan Province. In 1984, admitted to the Art Institute of Henan Province, Master Wang continued to perform further studies, vocal music and dance, and then had taken charge in Henan Art Troupe and Dabie Mountain Art Troupe.

Master Wang also made a big progress and succeeded in the field of arts. In the dancing competition of Tao Li Cup, held in Henan, China in 1986, he won the first prize for dancing arrangement of “Newborn” and dancing lead of “Fang Mu Pai”. From 1991 to 1996, he arranged one-thousand Tai Chi performer show for the celebration of Tea Festival, and always been invited to take part in the Spring Festival Evening Party by Henan TV station.

After he came to America, he soon made a big noise in trades all by his exquisite performance of Chinese Kungfu, and then was invited to act in film of Rush Hour 3, Ocean's Thirteen, etc. He also acted as fight director for parts of films in Hollywood.

Studied for Lifetime Benefits A blue-print to the World Wushu Association

Master Wang has put all his heart to develop this Chinese traditional art in America. He hopes to develop WWA in a long term then.

Presently, WWA has received the permissions from the government, which held over 200 members. The foundation of WWA meant to inherit, study and develop the legacy of Chinese martial arts; promote public activities and interests in martial arts; conduct research programs; select elite athletes and evaluate coaches and judges and conduct international exchanges and cooperation. What is more, WWA will also establish branches for people who interested from different countries, and organize parts of Traditional Chinese Medicine Colleges and performing centers for all the human being. He would like to train some 20 professional teachers to teach in different areas to make a real WWA then.

Presently, besides teaching in Martial Clubs, Master Wang sometimes will play a role of fight director, and real estate broker in home trading. Three majors all can be accomplished without coming into conflict. He said that earn economic foundation based on real estate broker will do more benefit for those two parts of his life.

An old saying shows, “People whom has a Single-minded temper, must be permanent in ambition; whom loves to read, could write nice articles; whom has a top-grand handicraft must practices excellent professional skills; and those people whom never achieved in their life, are all because of they do not care about what they practice.” This saying is more or same in meanings to what Master Wang asked himself of “hardship, perseverance and savvy”. In this way, Master Wang has crossed the peaks one after another in his life, and took the lead in whatever he practiced in.
